Movie Review: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

The crew of one of my favorite shows is back once again in a totally unrelated movie!!
Yep that's also right, they're enemies too!
BTW, I haven't seen the first episode of the 3rd season yet but I love Sherlock.
If you have Netflix and haven't watched it yet, watch it.

Rating: PG-13
Time: 161 min
Director: Peter Jackson
Stars: Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen

Once again, if you have not watched Sherlock the show and do own a Netflix account, you should definitely take a crack at it!
It is a great show, one of the best I've ever seen!
And there's only 2 seasons with 3 episodes each!
Sure the episodes are an hour and a half but still, see it!
But anyway to get to some more recent news this is the 2nd movie of the Hobbit trilogy.
I didn't read the books and that means I'll probably be giving the movie a better opinion because of that.
But anyway, on to the review!
So the plot of the movie is that it is still the same journey and Bilbo is still on his journey with the dwarves to go and reclaim the dwarves homeland from a great dragon named... SMAUG!!!!!
So what was good in the movie?
I remember briefly seeing the first Hobbit movie last year and liking it.
I don't remember loving it though or putting it on my top 10 list which this one will definitely appear.
I don't know what it is about this movie, or maybe it's me!
Maybe my taste has changed in the slightest and I just loved this movie more!
Or it could be that this movie is just so much more intriguing than the first one.
I absolutely loved this movie!
It had way more action and sequences that were just plain amazing.
The humor was quirky and made me laugh.
The humor was also put in at just the right moment so it never seemed awkward or out of the blue.
The special effects were amazing and made the world come to life.
The setting was pretty and just a joy to look at even without anything major going on.
The characters grew and I can't name one that I didn't love seeing.
The acting was great for a movie like this and the movie is just so much more entertaining.
The different scenes are more entertaining and the plot is just grasped me into the movie so much.
This movie is also a really long movie but none the less it pulled me in like I was one of the dwarves with them.
I had so much fun with this movie and if I had the time, I would definitely see it again!
But nevermind all of that, let's get to the part where most people are interested in.
Smaug is voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch and I'm not really sure if the voice meant any difference but he is awesome.
Smaug is so cool!
He has a weird evil personality that makes you like him even though he is evil.
And also, he is just so cool looking!
You get a brief glimpse of him in the trailer but that is just a small part to the amazing him.
I was not disappointed and was actually satisfied with how he played out.
So what wasn't good?
The truth is, I can't say much.
Sure there are some things that annoyed me here and there like the short side stories to the movie.
I didn't like so much the romance between an elf and a dwarf.
I thought that it was less entertaining than the rest and only brought me out of the main story itself.
Also, one of the major disappointments of the movie was the path that Gandalf takes.
He does an entirely different thing in the movie and I didn't enjoy watching him as much when he was on screen.
Other than that I can't really say anything else bad about the movie.
Orlando Bloom is back and he's awesome!
So all in all, I can understand why sophisticated people and people who watch movies for the oscar features won't enjoy this movie.
But for anyone who just wants to have a fun entertaining ride, you should definitely pick up some tickets to see this movie as fast as you can!
Score=9.0

Bad Grandpa
Now I wasn't sure if to make this a full review or not, but in the end I decided not too.
This movie was super funny and made me forget all my problems.
I had a super fun and entertaining time and that's all this movie is trying to do.
The only reason I made this a shorter review is because I want get in these last reviews fast so I can start my top ten list soon.
The only reason I wanted to make it long though, was because I think this movie has a pretty good chance on making it onto that list.

Movie Review: Captain Phillips

I was only going to do a brief review of this movie at the bottom of another review, but now waking up this morning and seeing that it was nominated for best picture, I feel like I'm obliged to give it a full review, even if that means it being short for I don't seem to remember much.

Rating: PG-13
Time: 134 min
Director: Paul Greengrass
Stars: Tom Hanks, Barkhad Abdi

It is in fact the truth that I am only reviewing this movie because it was nominated for an Oscar this morning.
I try to review all of the Oscar Best Picture Nominees that I can and at the moment I have seen 6/9.
The ones I have still yet to see are 12 Years a Slave, Philomena, and Nebraska.
Yes that does mean that a Wolf of Wall Street review is coming up.
Anyway, but that's not what I want to talk about.
I want to talk about the Golden Globes.
I knew Jennifer Lawrence was going to win for best supporting actress because she was great in American Hustle and also I just think that so many people love her it's hard not to be bias.
Cate Blanchett I think also deserved her award for best actress in Blue Jasmine.
I love that Leonardo DiCaprio won because... well, I'll review it later.
I'm surprised that Philomena was nominated for a Golden Globe and also Oscar because I have not heard so much about it.
And for the two separate Best Pictures I think we all knew they were going to win.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were really funny and I love them.
And so in the end, everything turned out pretty good at the Golden Globes.
NOW TO THE REVIEW!!!
So the plot in this movie is the true story of this captain who's cargo ship is hijacked by Somali pirates.
So what was good in the movie?
The acting in this movie was amazing!
A superb surprising phenomenal debut from Barkhad Abdi.
He did an absolute amazing job with the part and made it come so alive to the screen.
The other pirates as well were also very good but Abdi was the one that stood out.
Also, who can forget about Tom Hanks?
He was same as always very good in the movie and it's always nice to see him giving a great performance like he did now.
I also seemed to like the crew of the ship.
I thought they were the more fun and humorous part of the movie but only because they act totally confused which I guess they should be.
The plot and story to this movie was great as well.
The paths it takes were surprising and daring which I loved!
I always hate when movies have so much potential but waste it on a everything works out for everyone type ending, even the bad guy.
No but back to Abdi, his acting was so good and his character was so good that I actually liked him.
I wanted to see more of him and I just thought like he was a type of guy that I would want to have a coffee with.
The dialogue and written was great.
The suspense was great and I loved everything the suspense eventually led too.
The movie was super entertaining with great acting and just a phenomenal story that pulls you into the adventure you'll have.
If I had to say anything about the movie it would be that the beginning was slow but it sped up  much faster after 10 minutes.
Also I got a little tired of the reactions and behaviors of one of the Somali pirates.
I thought his character contributed much too the film but he just tired me after too much talking and too much of the same behavior with him.
He was played by Barkhad Abdirahman.
All in all the movie had minor flaws but was wildly gripping and entertaining.
Score=8.5

Free Birds
This movie was an animation that...
Well at least it wasn't a musical.
The movie is so realistic and so childish even for me who someone who likes animations still at his age.
The ending was weird and not done well.
The comedy was mostly dull only giving me 1 or 2 chuckles and it was just a bad thing to sit through.
Although if you have kids 8 or younger, they will love it.
Score=5.0

Runner Runner
This movie was over the top and too flashy.
I like Justin Timberlake but he was just a terrible actor in this movie.
I don't know if he could squint his eyes even more.
The movie was rushed and most surprisingly, the best part was Ben Affleck.
Yes, that's right, Ben Affleck.
The plot had holes and even though the music and setting of the movie was fun, the movie itself wasn't.
Score=4.5
